Judith F. Baumhauer Named 2012 Athena Award Winner

Orthopaedic surgeon Judith F. The award, an international program with more than 3,000 recipients, was founded in 1982 to recognize and honor the achievements of outstanding and professional business women. Introduced to Rochester in 1987 by the Rochester Women’s Council of the Rochester Business Alliance Inc., the program celebrates women of achievement in the community, noting their professional excellence and community service, and their active and generous assistance in helping other women develop professional excellence and leadership skills.

Fifteen women were chosen as finalists this year by the Rochester Women’s Council.

Baumhauer is a national leader in the field of orthopaedics. She served as the first female president of the Eastern Orthopaedic Association, is currently the first female president of the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society, and also is the first female director and president-elect of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.

Over the past 16 years her expertise and leadership have significantly expanded services in Orthopaedics’ Foot and Ankle Division. Baumhauer was the first female faculty member in the department and has played a leading role in bringing more diversity to the department, including the recruitment of four additional women faculty members.

Baumhauer is active in humanitarian outreach. In 2010, she served as a volunteer surgeon in Vietnam, where she worked in primitive, minimally supplied facilities to correct patients’ severe limb deformities from accidents, birth defects, or other serious health problems. In 2011, she traveled to India to teach 60 surgeons about the latest orthopaedic techniques.
