City of San Francisco to Repave Parnassus Avenue Through July
The City of San Francisco plans to repave Parnassus Avenue between 5th Ave and Clayton Street.
The work, which will include providing new curb modifications for disabled access, is scheduled to begin at 5th Avenue and Judah on Tuesday, Feb. 21 and finish at Clayton and Parnassus in July 2012, according to Maric Munn, director of Facilities Management.
The City’s contractor will be working on one block at a time. Workers will repave one side of the street at a time to allow for traffic flow.
During this sixth-month project, parking will be rescricted on Parnassus, Muni and shuttle bus stops will be temporarily relocated and traffic will be delayed at times.
“We will be meeting with the City on a weekly basis throughout the project to make sure we are coordinated,” Munn said. “Please forward any specific concerns to me at Maric.Munn@ucsf.eduso that I can communicate them to the City.”
Here’s what members of the UCSF community can expect with this city repaving project:
Impacts on UCSF Parnassus Campus
- For the block that is being repaved, there will be alternating one-way traffic on the either side. Traffic will be controlled by flag persons. Emergency vehicles will be given priority and let through. Those who drive along Parnassus, should expect delays.
- For the block that is being repaved, parking on both sides of the street will be prohibited in order to give enough room to allow for one-way traffic flow.
- The repaving will require jackhammering and removal of existing road bed, soil compaction (which will cause some vibration and noise), pouring a new concrete road bed, placing a layer of asphalt over the concrete and restriping.
- The contractor will take measures to mitigate dust. Campus and Medical Center Facilities Management will take measures to provide extra filtration for buildings that have intake air vents along Parnassus to reduce dust and odors.
- UCSF Shuttle bus stops and Muni bus stops will be temporarily relocated to areas not being constructed.
- UCSF has requested that work that affects patient drop off areas, Emergency Room entrance, access to the Ambulatory Care Center/Millberry Union (ACC/MU) Parking garage and access to Medical Center Way to be accomplished on weekends to minimize the number of people affected. Alternative drop off sites will be designated. Entrance to the ACC/MU garage will be from Irving Street for the time period that Parnassus Avenue access is unavailable.
- Delivery trucks that access loading docks via Koret Way will need to use a detour to avoid the 5th Avenue and Judah intersection while that area is being constructed.
- Delivery trucks using Medical Center Way should have limited access except for the weekend that access will be closed off. Alternative unloading areas will be designated.
