Male Fertility: Boosting Your Baby-making Power

Male Fertility: Boosting Your Baby-making Power

Despite millions of sperm hurtling towards a single egg, conceiving a baby isn’t always as turn-key as health class textbooks suggest.

As it turns out, nearly 15 percent of American men of childbearing age are sub-fertile, producing too few – or too many slow or misshapen – sperm. And according to URMC fertility expert Dr. Jeanne O’Brien, that number is only growing, probably because so many modern environmental convenience items – like plasticisers (chemicals like phthalates, which lend plastics their flexibility), preservatives in beauty products and lotions, even hormones given to speed the maturation of big, beefy livestock – mimic female hormones and thereby undermine men’s ability to churn out a steady supply of semen teeming with healthy, fast-swimming sperm.

So, what can men do to boost their odds of helping their partners conceive? Fortunately, there are a number of simple steps that can optimize one’s sperm count and quality. To learn more about them, just listen to Dr. O’Brien in the clip below.
