…

Wild Divine’s guided meditation and relaxation training products artfully combine state of the art technology with beautiful visuals, soothing sounds and effective meditation and breathing techniques to help you uncover your body’s natural ability to counter the effects of stressful situations and live a happier, more balanced life.

The “inner-active” programs allow you to witness and transform the rhythms of your thoughts, emotions and states of mind as they play together on the screen.

What is mind body medicine?

Hi, I’m Dr. Deepak Chopra, I’m the founder and Director of education Here at the Chopra Center for Wellbeing in

I’ve been teaching and writing about mind body techniques and mind body medicine for 25 years. I’ve written about 40 books on the subject and every day I learn from my patients as I teach them as we.. there’s no question that your mind affects the body and your spirit is the source of both your body and your mind. Wherever a thought goes, a molecule goes with it.

For thousands of years, Indian yogis have known that they can through conscious intent influence their autonomic nervous system, control their blood pressure, reduce acid secretion in the stomach, change their heart rate, change their body temperature.

So yogis are known to have expertise in mind body coordination or mind-body control.

What is Stress Response?

Today, one of the biggest epidemics in our society is what we call stress.

Stress is an inappropriate fight – flight response. So, in a stressful situation, we either run or we fight. This was all very well, when we were in a primordial forest and there was a tiger that wanted to eat us for breakfast, lunch or dinner. But today this fight – flight response is very frequently elicited quite inappropriately.

You’re late for work, you’re in a traffic jam, your wife says something that you don’t want to hear, your children are disorderly and off you go.

The inappropriate fight – flight response is called the Stress Response. The Stress Response is responsible for all the major epidemics of our time. From cardio-vascular illness, heart attacks, strokes, premature death from these illnesses. Immuno – compromised people who are more susceptible to infections and cancer. And of course the most devastating epidemic of our time – addictive behavior, which leads to so many other diseases, all as a result of stress.

How can technology play a role in prevention and treatment of disease?

In the last 15 to 20 years we’ve seen meditation and yoga and mind-body coordination techniques and breathing techniques gain immense popularity. Both for prevention of chronic illness but also as adjunctive treatments in people who already have some kind of illness.

Meditation, stress management – extremely useful in things like migraine, irritable bowel syndrome, stomach ulcers, muscular-skeletal disorders, hypertension, heart disease, patients coping with cancer. We have a lot of experience with that here.

And yet it takes a lot of time to learn these techniques. So it is really a matter of great joy for me and a lot of gratification that today we have technology that can help people learn these mind-body techniques much more quickly than it did in the past. What it took for people, even Yogis, several months or several years to learn, today can be facilitated through technology.

The technology of course that I’m speaking of is known as biofeedback. Biofeedback has been around for more than 30 years but only recently has biofeedback become quite sophisticated.

What is biofeedback?

The two most common way of measuring a person’s stress level or how relaxed they are:

first – the galvanic skin response. The galvanic skin response is what we measure when we do the lie detector test. So if somebody is stressed because they’re telling a lie, it immediately shows up in the flow of electricity in their skin. And so it’s a very good measure of whether you’re internally stressed or not.

And the other way to measure whether a person is stressed or relaxed, is something called heart rate variability. When you’re relaxed, when your body is flexible, when your consciousness is flexible, when you’re spontaneous, when you’re easy, you have something called increased RR variability. The interval between each heart beat varies because there’s flexibility in your consciousness, and therefore flexibility in your cardio-vascular response.

On the other hand, if you’re stressed, then because you secrete a lot of adrenaline, your heart rate doesn’t vary from beat to beat, it becomes very fixed, it’s like stressed people marching in an army. Boom, boom, boom, boom, at regular intervals.

So fixed RR interval is actually a measure of stress. Now it turns out that this RR variability is most sensitive, one of the most sensitive ways of knowing what’s happening in your mind and your emotions.

So if you’re thinking about smoking a cigarette and that causes a just a little surge of adrenaline, your RR variability gets quite fixed. Or if you’re thinking of someone who made a rude remark to you, or you’re harboring a grievance or resentment, or some little hostility, or you haven’t slept well the night before, or you’re worried about what’s going to happen at the office today, then that’ll show up.

In fact, RR variability is the most reliable sign of fetal health as well. You know, when the mother is pregnant and you measure the RR interval. If it varies in the babies heartbeat, then you can be sure that the baby is relaxed and alright and healthy. On the other hand, if the baby is distressed even in the womb, the RR variability diminishes and becomes fixed.

These are two very good measures of what’s happening in your consciousness, in your physiology, in your mind and in your emotions.

How does the Journey to Wild Divine work?

Now with biofeedback for example, this wonderful game that we’re introducing to you, called the Wild Divine, you can put these little electrodes, they’re so simple, these sensors, to put on your skin and they sense 2 things – galvanic skin response (the flow of electricity and the resistance to it) and they also measure RR variability.

And so, here we are now, I’m wearing the sensors, they go through this wonderful instrument which then translates that into computer software on my screen, and depending on whether I’m stressed or relaxed, the picture in the Wild Divine game changes.

I can do magical things if I’m relaxed – through breathing techniques, through meditation, through visualization, through putting intention and attention in my body, I can influence what’s happening in the video game.

I can go on a mythical journey, build bridges, go past canyons, open magical doors, do all kinds of wonderful things, where I’m doing it through my mind, I’m doing it through my emotions, I’m doing it by changing the flow of energy in my body.

Because ultimately a body is nothing but energy and information. Energy and information. Energy is influenced by attention – that’s the component of consciousness that influences energy. Whatever you put your attention on, you increase the energy. And information is intention. Intention is the trigger for transformation. Your body, being a field of energy and information, can be influenced through attention and intention.

So through this video game you can actually do wonderful things inside your body. You can regulate your heart beat, you can lower your blood pressure, you can change skin resistance, heart rate variability, in the future even brain waves.

But what I’m seeing here is that through this video game, in a few sessions, you are becoming a Yogi. You are learning that your mind, your body, your emotions and consciousness are one continuum.

How can The Journey Through the Wild Divine affect my mind-body wellness?

What I’m seeing here is that through this video game, in a few sessions, you are becoming a Yogi. You are learning that your mind, your body, your emotions and consciousness are one continuum.

This is a profound insight.

In fact, I talk in my book “The book of secrets” that we’re not in the world – the world is in us; we’re not in the body – the body is in us; ultimately, we’re not even in the mind – the mind is in us. The body, the mind, the world, they happen to us as we curve back within ourselves and we create our mind, our bodies and ultimately experiences of the world.

So, welcome to The Wild Divine and start this journey of integration between your body, your mind and your spirit. And ultimately, change your relationships through this in a nurturing manner, change your environment so it becomes nurturing to you, and change your experience of the world.

But you have to start by understanding that your body, and your mind and your spirit are part of one continuum and that continuum is consciousness.

In a few years I see the possibility that a patient goes to the doctor and the doctor says to the patient: “Mr. Smith, you have irritable bowel syndrome, migraines and acid reflux. I can give you a prescription for 2 or 3 kinds of pharmaceuticals. Or, maybe you can play this game – The Wild Divine. And then play the game and see what happens. Come back and see me in two weeks”. And maybe Mr. Smith doesn’t need the prescription anymore.

That’s going to happen. As we learn to influence our brainwaves we will be able to produce states of consciousness that are such that we won’t need to smoke that cigarette, or drink that alcohol, or take that drug.

The possibilities are endless. The journey has already begun.

Try The Wild Divine, see what happens. You’ll be surprised that you have immense power, immense control, immense influence to what’s happening in your body. Through choices that you will make, through techniques that you will learn – breathing, playing with your own energy fields, through a change in your intention, relaxing, meditating, visualizing, putting attention in different parts of your body, using your intention.

You will see that your body is actually not only a field of energy and information but a bundle of consciousness. And when you experience your body as a bundle of consciousness, you’ll feel immense joy, immense ecstasy, and it’ll become and adventure into healing, a journey into healing.

So I hope you’ll take advantage of this opportunity. Give us your feedback. Tell us what your experiences are. We’re already getting feedback from a lot of people who have tried it, and they say wonderful things.

“My headaches went away, my irritable bowel disappeared, my asthma is now under better control, I sleep better, my relationships have improved” – I could go on and on. Hundreds of people have sent testimonials. It’s is really very remarkable where modern technology and ancient wisdom come together, making us more than mere technicians, but real healers. Thank you.

Build stairways with your breath, open doors with meditation, juggle balls with your laughter, and so much more. The Journey makes active feedback, a popular method of self exploration, easily accessible and empowers you to take control of yourself, literally, into your own hands.

Customer reviews of Deepak Chopra Wild Divine

Some customer reviews of Deepak Chopra’s biofeedback software for relaxation training found on the web:

Independent customer review on Wild Divine, Relaxing Rhythms:

by Kim Higgins – I’ve had this program about 3 weeks and have finished the 15 steps, now I’m ready to go back and do my favorite meditation/breathing exercises.
I look forward to doing the program nightly and it has re-sparked my commitment to meditation. I like that you can spend as long as you like in meditation, although sometimes the words of wisdom/guidance seem too short in the beginning of the meditation, and I yearn for more. A lot of focus on breath in the exercises. I also have Wild Divine‘s “The Passage” an am using the biofeedback sensors from that program. I much prefer “Healing Rhythms” because of the focus on meditation. “The Passage” has short bouts of breathing exercises and you have to keep your hand on the mouse quite a bit-plus it’s very visually stimulationg, which keeps me from creating my own mental pictures. “Healing Rhythms” is much more soothing and healing and I’ve had some great visions and dreams as a result of the program.

Independent customer review on Wild Divine, The Journey:

by Kathryn Richardson – If this is a game, then “War and Peace” was a short story. Wild Divine is more like a series of new friends teaching you meditation, breath control, and mindfulness. It uses a biofeedback mechanism that is easy to set up on your computer – no expensive black boxes, no appointments to keep, and no stress management trainer required. Don’t look for scores or points; look to yourself. As an earlier reviewer said: you gain from this what you put into it.

There are no right answers in WD – or wrong ones, either. It is easy to become so caught up in the beautiful environment that it’s hard to pull away. People might say that about “Grand Theft Auto” or “Doom” too, – nothing “wrong” with that, but WD in a far healthier, quieter, and beautiful environment to explore and the only opponent is within you.

(By the way, for an enhanced experience, try using this with a big screen TV for a monitor! The teachers and guides seem even more intimate, impressive and real – it’s as if they are in the room with you.)

Another independent customer review on Wild Divine, The Journey:

by J. Ingram – This product came to my attention while investigating www.whatthebleep.com and I recommend it emphatically for anyone who has bi-polar and ADD or ADHD children or adults in your family. This wonderful bio-feedback video game will help everyone learn to control their own body. With that, one can start to control their emotional issues by closing their eyes and focusing on the kite or the levitating ball or the magic carpet or even the fireplace and calm him/herself or wake him/herself up at work. Sometimes the stress just gets overwhelming at work, and 5 minutes of this meditation game – you’re back to your old self again. It’s fantastic!!! Get it now and please don’t wait. No mouse or Keyboard, just your thoughts, breathing, pulse rate and galvanic skin response makes your world move in this learning tool. It is worth the price and so much more. I have 6 computers, I plan to open a small store and I will sell this to people and let them try it on my computers. This is a must for anyone who lives and works in the new millenium. Buy it! Now!

Again – customer review on Wild Divine, The Journey:

by S. Pasricha – The Journey’s price tag might raise an eyebrow. Why would you want to spend down so much money on a game? Because The Journey will most likely be one of the most innovative games you’ve ever played which will have remarkable and perceptible repercussions on your everyday life. The exercises and techniques that you will learn in The Journey will help you to reduce stress and anxiety in your life, and teach you to use your meditative mind to regulate your body’s physiology for improved creativity and performance. Even after completing The Journey, I often find myself revisiting certain parts of the game to relax and calm down at the end of the day, and it’s really effective. Think of this game as an investment.

The next installment of the Wild Divine series won’t require you to buy the hardware again, and there are already several enterprising fans of the game have already begun producing free applications to perform basic biofeedback graphing using the biofeedback equipment. I highly recommend this game to anyone – you owe it to yourself to give it a try, especially with the 30-day unconditional money back guarantee offered by the developers. If you do try it, you will find The Journey to be a fantastic voyage of self-discovery that offers an incredible sense of immersion and a learning experience you will never forget!

These are such incredible products that our advice is to just go and buy the Super Bundle Pack they have, at 39% discount. Otherwise, you’ll just find yourself going back and buying more and more, and paying much more!

The Super Bundle Pack includes everything Wild Divine has to offer – the flagship 15 Step Guided Program Relaxing Rhythms (previously known as Healing Rhythms), along with the original ‘best seller’ The Passage: Journey to the Wild Divine, acclaimed expansion pack Wisdom Quest, and the add-on software The Grapher.

What is breathwork?

Breathwork simply refers to the practice of conscious breathing — that is, consciously controlling your breathing patterns. It is common in certain meditative and Yogic practices.

Breathwork can bring many wonderful benefits, such as increased mental acuity, health improvements, greater energy levels, spiritual breakthroughs – and more.

“The Power of Breathing” breathwork sessions are derived from the Yoga practice of Pranayama, a Sanskrit term meaning “lengthening the breath.”

Most people never realize the profound benefits that breathwork can bring – just by changing how you breathe for a few minutes each day!

Is breathwork safe?

The guided breathwork techniques we share are completely safe.

They are invigorating, powerful and thoroughly enjoyable!

Please note however: If you have a respiratory condition or are prone to hyperventilating, then we advise that you seek medical advice before starting the course.

Is this the same as Holotropic breathwork?

No.

The Power of Breathing contains three levels, each designed to bring you the most powerful life benefits – in an absolutely safe environment.

Sub-variants of breathwork including Holotropic Breathwork ™ and rebirthing breathwork, which involve very rapid breathing in order to achieve alternate states of awareness. We do not endorse these potentially unsafe alternatives.

Is breathwork connected to religion?

No. Breathwork is not a religious practice.

Breathwork is well-recognized by health professionals as bringing many life-enhancing benefits to those that practice it. It is based on scientific principles, rather than any specific religion.

Breathwork is utilized within Yoga and other meditative practices, and many people report positive, spiritual breakthroughs when following a breathwork routine. However these are merely positive side-benefits to breathwork, and the product is not affiliated with any religion whatsoever.

What is on the CD? Are these guided sessions?

The Power of Breathing CD contains a 20-minute introduction to breathwork, and three individual breathwork sessions.

Each of the breakwork sessions is guided, meaning that you will be instructed when to breathe in and out. The audio sessions are progressive – so that you start with Level 1, and over time progress to Level 3.

Level 1 lasts 8 minutes, Level 2 lasts 10 minutes, and Level 3 lasts 15 minutes. Each progressive level uses more advanced breathing patterns.

Is there a Money-back Guarantee?

Yes, there is a Full 30-days 100% satisfaction guarantee – NO restocking fees!

Plus, you get 24/7 support from the breathwork team for any questions you may have.

If you’re looking for the official Heartmath emWave Personal Stress Reliever website, click here.

What is the emWave Personal Stress Reliever (PSR)?

emWave Personal Stress Reliever provides a portable and convenient way to reduce stress, balance emotions and increase performance. This scientifically validated, handheld stress reliever uses colorful LED displays, audio feedback and a powerful stress relief technique to help you significantly reduce your stress and increase your feelings of well-being.

Developed from the Institute of HeartMath’s 18 years of research on the relationship between the heart, brain, stress and emotions. emWave is both innovative and practical. It enhances your life through it scientifically validated technology, helping you reduce stress and gain a new sense of inner control.

The emWave is easy to use. Simply place your thumb on the sensor or attach the ear sensor. After your pulse is detected a breathing pacer will synchronize to your heart rhythms. Follow the Quick Coherence Technique, included with the emWave and you are on your way.

Use just minutes a day and you will learn to change the way you react to stress

How emWave Reduces Stress and Creates Coherence

EmWave Personal Stress Reliever will help you reduce the negative effects of stress, allowing you to experience greater health, more energy, and improved emotional balance and mental clarity. The “em” in emWave stands for empowerment; emWave empowers you to shift your emotional state and experience stress relief.

The emWave is based on hard science and incorporates the same patented HRV measurement and coherence scoring process found in the Freeze-Framer® Interactive Learning System, HeartMath’s award winning PC based product that is being used by ten’s of thousands of people in over 50 countries.

Here’s why it works. emWave shows the effects of stress on your body by measuring the subtle changes in your heart rhythms. This type of measurement is known as heart rate variability analysis or HRV. The analysis of HRV is recognized as a powerful, non-invasive measure that reflects heart-brain interactions and autonomic nervous system dynamics, which are particularly sensitive to changes in emotional state.

However, emWave does a lot more than just show the effects of stress on your body. It reduces stress by training you to create more “coherence.” Coherence is a term used by scientists to describe a highly efficient physiological state in which the nervous system, cardiovascular, hormonal and immune systems are working efficiently and harmoniously. Coherence is a state very similar to what athletes experience when they are in what is called “The Zone”.

Heart Rhythms and Coherence

When you experience stressful emotions such as tension, anxiety, irritation, or anger, your heart rhythm pattern becomes irregular and incoherent, which negatively affects health, brain function, performance and your sense of well-being (see the graph below).

Stress – Heart Rhythms Graph
Figure 1: heart rhythms when stressed

When you are experiencing positive emotions such as appreciation, care, joy or love, your heart rhythm pattern becomes more ordered and coherent. (See graph below.)

Coherence – Heart Rhythms
Figure 2: heart rhythms when feeling a positive emotion

Ordered and harmonious heart rhythms are an indicator of your “coherence level”. High coherence is a state associated with positive emotional attitudes which send signals to the brain that reduce stress, improve brain function, hormonal balance, immune response, coordination and reaction times. emWave determines the degree of coherence found in your heart rhythm patterns and displays changes in real-time on a large tri-colored LED–the Coherence Level Indicator.

* A red light indicates low coherence which would be normal.
* A blue light indicates medium coherence which shows good improvement
* A green light indicates high coherence the optimal high performance, stress-free state.

The goal in using emWave is to reduce stress by achieving and sustaining High Coherence (green). The Coherence Coach CD (included) provides instruction on how to do the Quick Coherence™ Technique to improve your coherence scores with emWave.

emWave is easy to use. Simply place your thumb on the sensor or attach the Ear Sensor. After your pulse is detected a breathing pacer which synchronizes to your heart rhythms begins. As you practice the Quick Coherence Technique, breathing with the pacer while at the same time activating a positive feeling like the care you have for someone or the appreciation you have for the good things in your life, your coherence level (indicated in a large colorful LED) will begin to change from red to blue to green.

emWave offers four challenge levels to help you sharpen your coherence building skills. You can change the brightness of the LED displays and the audio feedback level. Additionally, it incorporates an accumulated coherence scoring display so you can track your progress during a session and an advanced user mode.

For most people in today’s high stress world, it is rare for sustained periods of coherence to occur. Now with emWave Personal Stress Reliever you have a convenient, practical way to help you reduce stress and shift into a higher state of coherence anytime, anywhere. Your stress will diminish and your feelings of well-being, balance and enhanced energy will increase.

How is the emWave Personal Stress Reliever different from a heart rate monitor?

The emWave is very different from handheld devices that simply measure heart rate. The emWave Personal Stress Reliever analyzes your heart rhythms for “coherence”, a term used by scientists to describe a highly efficient physiological state in which the nervous system, cardiovascular, hormonal and immune systems are working efficiently and harmoniously. A heart rate monitor only provides you with information about your average heart rate.

How does using this stress management device differ from deep breathing?

While rhythmic breathing exercises can help control your heart rate and have a calming effect on the body, shifting attitudes and emotions take more than that. Research shows that the key to learning how to neutralize and counter the effects of stress is by actively adding a positive feeling such as appreciation, care and compassion to the process. Experiencing positive emotions has a much broader range of health and wellness benefits than simply forcing the system into coherence through rhythmic breathing. Generating feelings of appreciation, care or compassion adds a dynamic element for stress management. Using the breathing pacer found in the emWave in conjunction with generating positive emotions helps synchronize your nervous system and creates positive changes in your heart rhythm patterns to create and sustain the coherence needed for stress relief.

emWave Personal Reliever Benefits

Frequent users of the emWave Personal Stress Reliever report:

stress reduction

increased energy and resilience

greater mental clarity for decision-making and creativity

enhanced emotional balance and improved listening ability

better, more restful sleep

Most people get into medium or high coherence within a few short sessions and feel a reduction in stress. Using the Quick Coherence® technique, which you can read about in the manual or learn from the Coherence Coach CD included in the package, is highly recommended as it accelerates the process of learning tools for stress management. Practicing stress management techniques is the key, but results generally come quickly. Additionally, emWave includes four challenge levels so that as you practice you can continue to refine your ability to eliminate and counter the negative effects of stress.

How is the emWave different from other stress management devices?

There are certainly other stress management devices designed to help people with stress and HeartMath’s position is that we are very much in favor of any stress management devices or stress management techniques that can help with the mounting global stress problem.

What distinguishes the emWave from many other stress managment products is the significant body of published scientific research that has been incorporated into its development. Heartmath‘s 15 years of experience, validation and practical applications demonstrate the effectiveness in all of the stress management products that HeartMath offers. Additionally, emWave is just one of many products found in the HeartMath system. The system — consists of tools, stress management techniques and proven PC based technology (Freeze-Framer Interactive Learning System). All HeartMath products and services compliment each other and have been used for stress managment and increasing performance by hundreds of thousands of people in over 50 countries, and applied in Fortune 100 corporations, health care systems, government agencies and school systems. emWave is an extension of this system and carries with it the breadth of credibility and proven results associated with HeartMath.

Has HeartMath done studies to support the benefits of the emWave?

Heartmath has done numerous studies on the effect of positive emotions on stress, physiology and human performance. These studies have been published in prestigious journals including Stress Medicine, American Journal of Cardiology, Preventive Cardiology, Journal of the American College of Cardiology, Integrative Physiological and Behavioral Science and Harvard Business Review.

What is the PSR actually measuring?

Both the PSR and the emWave Desktop measure your Heart Rate Variability: the time-intervals between the heartbeats. Whenever we are stressed, these time-intervals become jagged and irregular, sending a chaotic pattern throughout our body. And we feel this: our body becomes tense. HeartMath has done a lot of research on the effect of emotions on our body and when we experience positive emotions such as care, gratitude, appreciation and compassion, those time-intervals in our Heart Rate Variability Pattern become very smooth and sine-wave like. This creates a much more orderly and balanced pattern in our internal systems, creating a state of coherence. We experience this as a more calm, harmonious state.

Can I use the emWave along with other stress management practices?

Yes, emWave works well as an adjunct to other stress managment practices. It can easily provide verification of the effectiveness of many other approaches to counter the effects of stress and can be used as a friendly facilitator of other stress management methods.

Do I need to be experienced with technology in order to use the emWave device?

No. emWave Personal Stress Reliever is very simple and easy to use. The Quick Start Guide and the owner’s manual provide clear instructions on how to easily operate and immediately benefit from your emWave.

Is there training available to help me learn about my HeartMath product?

Yes. There is a free Personal Stress Reliever® e-Training, a free emWave® PC Stress Relief System Orientation Class as well as personal HeartMath instruction.

Aside from helping to reduce stress, are there other applications for using the emWave that I can benefit from?

The applications of the emWave Personal Stress Reliever include more than stress managment. Increasing your coherence level — which is the primary goal of using the emWave — increases performance.
Glamour magazine review excerpt:

I started breathing and the reading was not good: red (my stress levels were high, as was my blood pressure). But after several minutes of deep breathing, I got my breathing in alignment and the light changed to blue and then green. And, here’s the kicker: I actually felt better–a lot better.

What is Public Speaking Anxiety (Stage fright)?

Stage fright, also known as glossophobia (taken from Greek glossa; tongue, and phobos; fear or dread), is the fear of public speaking.

Not uncommon, stage fright (public speaking anxiety) is placed even before death as the greatest fear for one out of three people in the United States. In addition, three out of every four people suffer from stage fright. Stage fright is the fear of anxiety related to real or anticipated communication from others. In other words, stage fright is a direct function of the perception of the situation and affects the speaker in two ways: physiologically and emotionally. Let’s look at how our perception of stage fright affects our speech dynamics:

PHYSIOLOGICALLY:

Anxiety is described as the anticipation of a situation that is perceived as threatening. When faced with this type of threat, the body reacts in the flight or flight response. Consequently, adrenaline and/or epinephrine are released into the bloodstream, resulting in an accelerated heart rate, an increase in blood pressure and irregular breathing patterns. These responses can then lead to perspiration, uncontrollable shaking, shivers, flushing of the face, dry mouth and the desire to fidget with objects. The irregularity in breathing can itself lead to short-term memory loss, the weakening of the voice (resulting in stammering or stuttering), and in the extreme case disorientation or hyperventilation.

EMOTIONALLY:

The emotional impact of perceived threat or fear is what causes the physiological symptoms of stage fright to occur in the first place. This perceived fear is the fear of looking foolish to others and the fear of public humiliation. Humiliation sabotages the ego and compromises self confidence. So great is this fear that many people will avoid jobs/job interviews that require public speaking, avoid promotions, or for students, avoid classes that require public speaking, or change majors based on the perceived peril of stage fright (public speaking anxiety). Our culture equates effective and fluid articulation to intelligence. A good leader is generally defined as one who possesses these traits, thereby raising the stakes yet higher for those with stage fright issues.

It is important to keep in mind that stage fright (fear of public speaking) is hardly uncommon. Some studies have shown that stage fright strikes some people harder than others. People who are anxious by nature; either ‘high trait’ or generalized anxiety sufferers, are not surprisingly those who possess the most stage fright. These people actually tend to become more anxious as the presentation gets underway and remain nervous even when the presentation is over. People with ‘low trait’ anxiety, on the other hand, tend to relax once they begin to speak, often wishing they would have had more time.

Stage fright isn’t limited to public speaking or delivering presentations. Rather, anytime in any given social situation, wherein people are exchanging verbal remarks that need to sound persuasive and effective, there appears to be an increase in anxiety symptoms, preventing effective communication.

Here’s the good news: Stage fright (public speaking fear) is manageable and can be overcome. Some anxiety is actually good for a speech; rendering the speaker passionate and intense in regard to subject matter. There are a variety of tools for curbing stage fright: an effective herbal supplement application ( Bravina’s Ingredients) in conjunction with natural anxiety reduction techniques ( Overcoming Stage Fright) can greatly modify anxious behaviors and allow you to become an articulate, effective and persuasive public speaker.

Bravina Review. How does Bravina Work?

Bravina Ingredients

Passiflora - This supplement has been widely utilized for reducing anxiety and restlessness. Chemicals in the passiflora increase the levels of the neurotransmitter known as gamma-aminobutyric-acid (GABA), decreasing nerve cell activity in the brain, causing relaxation and relief from anxiety.

In addition, passiflora contains chemicals known as harmala alkaloids. This enzyme (monoamine oxidase) affects beneficial neurotransmitters – namely, dopamine and serotonin – which positively affect mood stability.

Motherwort (leonurus cardiaca) - Traditionally, motherwort has been extensively utilized to treat a myriad of conditions. Leonurine and stachydine, both found in this supplement, have been shown to lower blood pressure and calm the central nervous system. In addition, its calming effect on emotions and has been widely used to treat anxiety. This supplement may be most effective when the heart rate increases due to increasing nervousness.

St. John’s Wort - This widely utilized supplement is commonly used to treat anxiety and nervousness. St. John’s Wort is believed to inhibit serotonin (5-HT) reuptake (the process by which the presynaptic terminal of a neuron reabsorbs and recycles the molecules of neurotransmitter it has previously secreted in conveying an impulse to another neuron), similar to many selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI’s) including fluoxetine and sertraline.

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) - Ashwaganda is often classified as a common adaptogen, which is a supplement that increases the body’s resistance to stress, trauma, anxiety and fatigue. This supplement promotes the body’s ability to maintain homeostasis and resist stress. Researchers have found an increase in acetycholine receptor activity in the brain in humans after ingesting Ashwagandha, which might partly explain the cognition-enhancing and memory-improving effects. In addition, this supplement can be utilized to fight fatigue during periods of mental or physical tension, ultimately acting as a vitalizer and energizer.

Valerian root (valerianaceae) - This supplement is also noted for its ability to increase GABA in the synaptosomes, possibly due to the high levels of GABA in the root itself. In addition, this supplement may help inhibit GABA reuptake as well. As discussed, GABA neurotransmitters have been utilized to decrease nerve cell activity during periods of overstimulation.

Eleuthero Root - This supplement is credited with antioxidant properties said to boost the body’s resistance to external stress while enhancing capacity for concentration. This supplement affects the adrenal glands by helping to prevent “adrenal burnout” caused by ongoing physical or mental stress. In addition, this supplement has been utilized to boost concentration and focus, ultimately promoting mental resilience and memory.

Panax - This widely utilized supplement balances the release of stress hormones by supporting the organs that produce them (hypothalamus, pituitary and adrenal glands). Ultimately, this supplement’s adaptogen substances have been utilized to reduce stress while enhancing mental concentration. Proponents point to this supplement’s ability to facilitate simple and abstract thinking during periods of public speaking anxiety (stage fright).

Ginkgo Biloba - This supplement is one if the most scientifically studied and prescribed supplements used today. Numerous and well-documented studies have been conducted on its ability to enhance memory and cognitive functioning. Known for its membrane-stabilizing effects, Ginko Biloba appears to reduce blood viscosity, which means that the heart can operate more effectively. This effect may be partially responsible for memory enhancement by providing more oxygen to the brain.

Octacosanol - The delivery of oxygen to your body’s cells is a vital process that may be aided by supplement intake. Octacosanol is shown to increase oxygen utilization during exercise and periods of mental stress. This increases physical endurance, improves your reaction time and ultimately helps your body fight fatigue.>

The good news is that there is a way out of that now.

Being stress and anxiety free is pre-programmed into every one of us. All the Linden Centre does is to show how to flip the anxiety switch from on to off!

While working for the U.S. forces in Germany in the late 80’s Charles Linden began to suffer from acute anxiety and started having panic attacks. He was quickly prescribed several medicines to deal with the symptoms. But, as you probably know, medicines don’t get to the root and eliminate the cause of anxiety… they just help mask it.

Drawing from his own experience, he spent two years developing The Linden Method. Tested and refined, over the past decade it has been used successfully worldwide by more than 88 000 people. People who have tried previously, without success, to find a cure. Those people are now living life to the full. Finally 100% free from a dreadful condition.

Why is the Linden Method so successful?

It can be attributed to a number of things:

It was developed by a knowledgeable person who had suffered for many years

The root cause of anxiety disorders is addressed

There are no drugs involved and therefore no harmful side effects

It is an easy to follow program

It is soothing and gentle with nothing frightening, but at the same time extremely effective.

Unlimited support and advice is available from trained and sympathetic counselors

Tested and approved by doctors and psychologists, the Linden Method is on its way to becoming the number one treatment for panic attacks and anxiety disorders

Hello again. You’re probably wondering why I joined this website as I don’t suffer from anxiety disorder anymore. The reason is this. If Charles Linden and other ex-sufferers hadn’t bothered helping me out then I would still be suffering now. That’s a fact. I’m in debt to them. And it’s only fair that I should make an effort to help current sufferers get better.

It wasn’t fair on me that I suffered and it’s not fair on you if you are suffering. It’s nasty. I’m not a specialist on the subject. All I can do is my best to help. Believe me, it is possible to be completely anxiety free, I’m living proof. - Chris V - Small Steps Forums

And i heard an interview on bbc radio 2, i think maybe radio 1 lol. Its worth a million pounds! to think, ALL that money i spent on books and hypnos cd’s, i could of bvought the linden method 5 times over, if not more. - Wannabeloved85 – No More Panic

What is Biofeedback and Neurofeedback?

The physiological activity that is going on inside your body and nervous system is a process that is constantly changing, moving and responding. It responds to what happens to the outer world around you, but also to your inner world of thought, perception and emotion.

Indicators like heart rate, respiration, blood circulation, body temperature and others adjust themselves constantly based on the feedback they get from the bodies inbuilt senses, to find the optimal balance in state. These vital rhythms define your very life. Your health, wellness and performance.

But what if this activity is out of balance?

Many modern health problems, such as tension headaches, stress related anxiety, hyperventilation, high blood pressure, forms of chronic pain, as well as attention and mental performance problems (ADHD) stem from neurobiological dysfunctions, as well as from behavior and lifestyle patterns.

In that case, we should not simply only rely on pills and medication, lifestyle, stress, or in other words behavior, can also be a cause for health and performance problems.

Many researchers, clinicians and health professionals are becoming increasingly interested to understand the role of the human nervous system and behavior in health and performance. This is the exciting scientific field where psychology and physiology meet.

Biofeedback and Neurofeedback refer to technology which enables us to literally see what the body is doing, in real time. It’s like having a mirror in which we can see the physiological signals the mind – body system, and this enables us to notice and learn how we can gain control over our physiological state, our stress levels, attention and performance.

How does Biofeedback and Neurofeedback work?

Biofeedback is most often based on measurements of:
•	Blood pressure
•	Brain waves (EEG)
•	Breathing
•	Heart rate
•	Muscle tension
•	Skin conductivity of electricity
•	Skin temperature

By watching these measurements, you can learn how to alter these functions by relaxing or by holding pleasant images in your mind.
Electrodes measure your heart rate, blood pressure, or other function. A monitor displays the results for both you and the trained practitioner to see. A tone or other sound may be used to let you know when you’ve reached a goal or certain state.
While the practitioner describes stressful situations and guides you through relaxation techniques, you can see how your heart rate and blood pressure change in response to being stressed or remaining relaxed.

Biofeedback teaches you how to control and change these bodily functions. By doing so, you feel more relaxed and may be able to help treat such conditions.

Conditions Treated by Biofeedback

Biofeedback is particularly useful with can help with stress-related conditions where there is sympathetic or adrenal stress. It is also useful for conditions where there is inadequate control over muscle groups or muscle dysfunction. Conditions treated with biofeedback include:

stress

headaches

asthma

muscle injury

pain relief

insomnia

TMJ

high blood pressure

digestive disorders

attention deficit disorder

incontinence

poor posture

tennis elbow

golfer’s elbow

irritable bowel syndrome

hyperactivity

Raynaud’s disease

ringing of the ears

constipation

twitching of the eyelids

esophageal dysfunction

Biofeedback Therapy and Training

Biofeedback therapy is the type of training that helps people gain control over physiological reactions that are normally unconscious and automatic.

by Kim Higgins – I’ve had this program about 3 weeks and have finished the 15 steps, now I’m ready to go back and do my favorite meditation/breathing exercises.
“Healing Rhythms” is much more soothing and healing and I’ve had some great visions and dreams as a result of the program.

by Kathryn Richardson – If this is a game, then “War and Peace” was a short story.

Guidelines for Better Sleep

Sleeping well is a habit that you can learn! Small changes can have big effects. Start today by following these rules:

Take care of your body
• Do not drink caffeine: no tea, coffee, or coca-cola after 4 o’clock
• Do not eat a big or spicy meal late in the evening
• Do not go to bed hungry
• Avoid alcohol as it interferes with sleep

Physical exercise, such as a brisk walk, in the late afternoon can help to make your body tired and help you to sleep. Try to do some exercise each day.

Sleep only at night-time and do not have day-time naps, no matter how tired you feel. Naps only keep the problem going by making it harder for you to get to sleep the next night.

Having a regular bedtime routine teaches your body when it’s time to go to sleep.
• Go to bed at same time each night
• Try to get up at the same time every day, even if this is tiring to begin with
• Have a soothing drink like camomile tea or a milky drink
• Have a bath, or a routine of washing your face and brushing your teeth
• When in bed think of nice things (e.g. think of 5 nice things that happened that day – they might be big or small, such as a nice conversation, seeing the sunshine, or hearing nice music on the radio)
• Do a relaxed breathing exercise (e.g. breathe in for a count of four, hold it for a count of two, then breathe out for a count of six)

Coping with bad dreams can be difficult. Some people don’t like relaxation before going to sleep, or are scared of letting go. If that is you, try these preparation techniques instead:
• Prepare yourself in case you have bad dreams by thinking of a bad dream then think of a different ending for it. Practice this new ending many times before going to sleep.
• Before going to sleep prepare to re-orient yourself when you wake from a bad dream.
• Put a damp towel or a bowl of water by the bed to splash your face, place a special object by the bed, such as a photograph, or a small soft toy.
• When you wake up from a bad dream- move your body if you can and reorient yourself immediately (touching object, wetting face, going to the window, talk to yourself in a reassuring way)

Make your bedroom a pleasant place to be
* Get a nightlight
* Keep it clean and tidy
* Introduce pleasant smells such as a drop of lavender oil onto the pillow
* Get extra pillows
* Make sure that your home is safe e.g. doors locked, windows closed.

REMEMBER: Bed is for sleeping, so if you cannot sleep after 30 minutes, get up and do another activity elsewhere such as reading or listening to music (try and avoid TV as it can wake you up). After 15 minutes return to bed and try to sleep again. If you still can’t sleep
after 30 minutes get up again. Repeat this routine as many times as necessary and only use your bed for sleeping in.

Low-income Urban Mothers Have High Rate of Postpartum Depression
Study shows for first time that screening tools accurately identify depression

More than half of low-income urban mothers met the criteria for a diagnosis of depression at some point between two weeks and 14 months after giving birth, according to a study led by University of Rochester Medical Center researchers and published online by the journal Pediatrics.

This is the first study to describe the prevalence of depression among low-income urban mothers, who were attending well-child care visits, through the use of a diagnostic interview. It also is the first study of this population group to test the accuracy of three depression screening tools routinely used by physicians.

The screening tools have high accuracy in identifying depression, the researchers concluded, but cutoff scores may need to be altered to identify depression more accurately among low-income urban mothers.

The study involved 198 mothers who were 18 years of age or older and whose children were no older than 14 months. The mothers attended well-child visits at the outpatient pediatric clinic at Golisano Children’s Hospital at the Medical Center.

The researchers found that 56 percent of the mothers, after a diagnostic interview, met the criteria for a diagnosis of a major or minor depressive disorder.

“This is an unexpected, very high proportion to meet diagnostic criteria for depression,” said Linda H. Chaudron, M.D., associate professor of Psychology, Pediatrics and of Obstetrics and Gynecology. “This may be a group at high risk for depression. The message of this study is that pediatricians and other clinicians who work with low-income urban mothers have multiple screening tools that are easy to use and accurate. These tools can help clinicians identify mothers with depression so they can be referred for help.”

Many women experience the so-called “baby blues.” When the feelings persist or worsen it may be clinical depression. The symptoms include insomnia, persistent sadness, lack of interest in nearly all activity, anxiety, change in appetite, persistent feelings of guilt, and thoughts of harming oneself or the baby. Postpartum depression affects up to 14 percent of new mothers in the United States, with higher rates among poor and minority women.

The researchers evaluated three screening tools, the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, the Beck Depression Inventory II and the Postpartum Depression Screening Scale, using the diagnostic interviews for validation.

The three screening tools have been evaluated in many populations, but one of the reasons the study was done was to test the tools with a group for whom there is not much data—low-income women, especially African-American women, Chaudron said. The researchers also evaluated the validity of the screening tools at various times during the postpartum year.

“The screening tools are valid when used anytime during the postpartum year,” Chaudron said.

Use of traditional cutoff scores may not be as accurate as previously thought. Clinicians should be aware that scores two or three points below traditional cutoff scores may indicate a need for further evaluation, the researchers concluded.

The study was funded by a grant from the National Institute of Mental Health.

In addition to Chaudron, the authors of the article included: Peter G. Szilagyi, M.D., M.P.H., professor of Pediatrics; Wan Tang, Ph.D., research assistant professor of Biostatistics and Computational Biology; Elizabeth Anson, M.S., of the University of Rochester School of Nursing; Nancy L. Talbot, Ph.D., associate professor of Psychiatry; Holly I.M. Wadkins, M.A., of the Department of Psychiatry; Xin Tu, Ph.D., professor of Biostatistics and Psychiatry; and Katherine L. Wisner, M.D., M.S., professor of Psychiatry, Obstetrics and Gynecology and of Epidemiology, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

What is Brain Fitness Software?
Who would have known that there are some trainings we can do with computerized programs which make possible improvements in processing speed or hearing or vision or short term memory or even IQ? Those trainings enhance neurogenesis and synaptogenesis and neuroplasticity, which are life long processes that we did not know about even ten years ago.

Brain fitness software is designed to work on the most important areas of your brain by offering different brain exercises and games
Brain fitness software.

Interesting Fact:
Scientific research has shown that the brain never stops changing and adjusting to its environment. This ability is important for acquiring new knowledge and for compensating for deficiencies that result from age or injury.

Exercising the brain can mean many things. One thing for sure, it is an accepted fact that two new discoveries about the brain are true.

The first is that we grow new brain cells every day, which is called neurogenesis.

The second is that the brain is incredibly plastic, and changes when we learn something new, which is a capacity called neuroplasticity, and means that neurons form new connections.

There are many techniques in which a person can implement to improve their brain fitness. But the fact is, beginners are often overwhelmed by the choices instead of getting excited. For this reason, let’s start with the simplest ways to improve your brain. <a title="Brain fitness software.

By definition, an affirmation is a statement repeated time and again either verbally or mentally — or written down. The words of the affirmation statement – in themselves -when spoken, thought of, or written *without* a pictorial (visualized) or emotional connection — make a very weak affirmation.

Daily Positive Affirmations, when worded correctly — and when emotionally charged – are able to tap into the unlimited creative power of your subconscious mind, and manifest your desires.

Affirmations are not all created equal. Some are, of course, better than others. There are *power affirmations* that have been proven again and again to work – and I’ll reveal some of them in a moment.

When you examine the structure of these power affirmations, you, too, can learn how to create your own powerful affirmations for your specific purposes.

Consider the following:

“I am what I choose to be.”
“All my needs are met instantaneously.”
“I love and accept myself exactly as I am.”
“_____________ comes to me easily and effortlessly.”
(Fill in the blank with what you desire.)
“I am now perfectly healthy in body, mind and spirit.”
“I now create my wonderful, ideal life.”

What do the above power Daily Positive Affirmations have in common?

1) They’re stated in the present tense.

An affirmation is more effective when stated in the present tense. For example; “I now have a wonderful job.” Avoid affirming something in the future tense, e.g. “I am going to have a wonderful job” or the results will always be waiting to happen.

2) They express a positive statement.

Daily Positive Affirmations need to be stated in the most positive terms possible. Avoid negative statements. Affirm what you do want, rather than what you don’t want. For example: “I am no longer sick.” This is a negative statement. Instead, affirm: ”I am now perfectly healthy in body, mind and spirit.” This statement is much more powerful as it is positive and reinforces your desired goal and doesn’t confuse your subconscious mind with the mention of the undesirable condition.

3) They’re short and specific.

Short affirmations are easy to say, and have a far greater impact at the subconscious level than those which are long and wordy. Keeping them specific and to the point adds power as the idea is uncluttered by extraneous elements.

The mechanics that make affirmations powerful are:

* Repetition
The importance of repetition cannot be overemphasized. It imprints the affirmation into your subconscious mind.

* Emotions
Get involved, be passionate, and use your emotions. Think carefully about the meaning of the words as you repeat them rather than just writing, typing or saying them.

* Persistence
Practicing affirmations with persistence achieves results much sooner than practicing them periodically. Successive sessions will have a compounding effect.

* Belief
You don’t necessarily have to believe your affirmation initially, in order for it to work. Belief will grow with your forthcoming successes. What you do need is the ability to *feel* what it would be like when the desire you’re affirming is fulfilled, or your need met. Every time that you have a need — and that need is met — a certain “feeling” is produced in you. You need to evoke that same feeling when you state your affirmation. In other words, you need to feel with every fiber of your being that what you desire has already happened. Without this feeling, your affirmation is powerless.

* Impress Yourself
Personalize your affirmations. They must *resonate* with you — feel right for you. The stronger your connection with the affirmation, the deeper the impression it makes on your mind, and the sooner you will experience positive results.

So there you have it – the simple formula for creating affirmations that work. Based on the above, you can easily create your own affirmations to manifest any desire or need you have in life.

TIP: Although the practice of Daily Positive Affirmations is easy, some people find it challenging to repeat the affirmations continuously while maintaining the highly charged emotional state necessary in making affirmations work. DID YOU KNOW… that you can use your computer to make the affirmation process effortless – and that you can automate those challenging aspects (such as maintaining highly charged emotions), and thereby, manifest your desires more quickly?
People with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) go through the day filled with exaggerated worry and tension, even though there is little or nothing to provoke it. They anticipate disaster and are overly concerned about health issues, money, family problems, or difficulties at work. Sometimes just the thought of getting through the day produces anxiety.

GAD is diagnosed when a person worries excessively about a variety of everyday problems for at least 6 months. People with GAD can’t seem to get rid of their concerns, even though they usually realize that their anxiety is more intense than the situation warrants. They can’t relax, startle easily, and have difficulty concentrating. Often they have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep.

All of us worry about things like health, money, or family problems at one time or another. But people with GAD are extremely worried about these and many other things, even when there is little or no reason to worry about them. They may be very anxious about just getting through the day. They think things will always go badly. At times, worrying keeps people with GAD from doing everyday tasks.

This is a list of common symptoms. People with GAD:

worry very much about everyday things for at least six months, even if there is little or no reason to worry about them;

can’t control their constant worries;

know that they worry much more than they should;

can’t relax;

have a hard time concentrating;

are easily startled; and

have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep.

common body symptoms are:

feeling tired for no reason;

headaches;

muscle tension and aches;

having a hard time swallowing;

trembling or twitching;

being irritable;

sweating;

nausea;

feeling lightheaded;

feeling out of breath;

having to go to the bathroom a lot; and

hot flashes.

“I always thought I was just a worrier. I’d feel keyed up and unable to relax. At times it would come and go, and at times it would be constant. It could go on for days. I’d worry about what I was going to fix for a dinner party, or what would be a great present for somebody. I just couldn’t let something go.”

When my problems were at their worst, I’d miss work and feel just terrible about it. Then I worried that I’d lose my job. My life was miserable until I got treatment.

“I’d have terrible sleeping problems. There were times I’d wake up wired in the middle of the night. I had trouble concentrating, even reading the newspaper or a novel. Sometimes I’d feel a little lightheaded. My heart would race or pound. And that would make me worry more. I was always imagining things were worse than they really were. When I got a stomachache, I’d think it was an ulcer.”

When their anxiety level is mild, people with GAD can function socially and hold down a job. Although they don’t avoid certain situations as a result of their disorder, people with GAD can have difficulty carrying out the simplest daily activities if their anxiety is severe.

GAD affects about 6.8 million American adults, including twice as many women as men. The disorder develops gradually and can begin at any point in the life cycle, although the years of highest risk are between childhood and middle age.2 There is evidence that genes play a modest role in GAD.

Other anxiety disorders, depression, or substance abuse often accompany GAD, which rarely occurs alone. GAD is commonly treated with medication or cognitive-behavioral therapy, but co-occurring conditions must also be treated using the appropriate therapies.

People with PTSD may startle easily, become emotionally numb (especially in relation to people with whom they used to be close), lose interest in things they used to enjoy, have trouble feeling affectionate, be irritable, become more aggressive, or even become violent. They avoid situations that remind them of the original incident, and anniversaries of the incident are often very difficult. PTSD symptoms seem to be worse if the event that triggered them was deliberately initiated by another person, as in a mugging or a kidnapping.
Anxiety Disorders – Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PSTD) is an article review from: Medicinezine.com

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Occurences

Most people with PTSD repeatedly relive the trauma in their thoughts during the day and in nightmares when they sleep. These are called flashbacks. Flashbacks may consist of images, sounds, smells, or feelings, and are often triggered by ordinary occurrences, such as a door slamming or a car backfiring on the street. A person having a flashback may lose touch with reality and believe that the traumatic incident is happening all over again.

“I was raped when I was 25 years old. For a long time, I spoke about the rape as though it was something that happened to someone else. I was very aware that it had happened to me, but there was just no feeling.”

“Then I started having flashbacks. They kind of came over me like a splash of water. I would be terrified. Suddenly I was reliving the rape. Every instant was startling. I wasn’t aware of anything around me, I was in a bubble, just kind of floating. And it was scary. Having a flashback can wring you out.”

“The rape happened the week before Thanksgiving, and I can’t believe the anxiety and fear I feel every year around the anniversary date. It’s as though I’ve seen a werewolf. I can’t relax, can’t sleep, don’t want to be with anyone. I wonder whether I’ll ever be free of this terrible problem.”

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms

Not every traumatized person develops full-blown or even minor PTSD. Symptoms usually begin within 3 months of the incident but occasionally emerge years afterward. They must last more than a month to be considered PTSD. The course of the illness varies. Some people recover within 6 months, while others have symptoms that last much longer. In some people, the condition becomes chronic.

PTSD affects about 7.7 million American adults,but it can occur at any age, including childhood. Women are more likely to develop PTSD than men, and there is some evidence that susceptibility to the disorder may run in families. PTSD is often accompanied by depression, substance abuse, or one or more of the other anxiety disorders.

Certain kinds of medication and certain kinds of psychotherapy usually treat the symptoms of PTSD very effectively.

People with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) have persistent, upsetting thoughts (obsessions) and use rituals (compulsions) to control the anxiety these thoughts produce. Most of the time, the rituals end up controlling them.

For example, if people are obsessed with germs or dirt, they may develop a compulsion to wash their hands over and over again. If they develop an obsession with intruders, they may lock and relock their doors many times before going to bed. Being afraid of social embarrassment may prompt people with OCD to comb their hair compulsively in front of a mirror-sometimes they get “caught” in the mirror and can’t move away from it. Performing such rituals is not pleasurable. At best, it produces temporary relief from the anxiety created by obsessive thoughts.

“I couldn’t do anything without rituals. They invaded every aspect of my life. Counting really bogged me down. I would wash my hair three times as opposed to once because three was a good luck number and one wasn’t. It took me longer to read because I’d count the lines in a paragraph. When I set my alarm at night, I had to set it to a number that wouldn’t add up to a ’bad’ number.”

“I knew the rituals didn’t make sense, and I was deeply ashamed of them, but I couldn’t seem to overcome them until I had therapy.”

“Getting dressed in the morning was tough, because I had a routine, and if I didn’t follow the routine, I’d get anxious and would have to get dressed again. I always worried that if I didn’t do something, my parents were going to die. I’d have these terrible thoughts of harming my parents. That was completely irrational, but the thoughts triggered more anxiety and more senseless behavior. Because of the time I spent on rituals, I was unable to do a lot of things that were important to me.”

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Common Obsessions

Other common rituals are a need to repeatedly check things, touch things (especially in a particular sequence), or count things. Some common obsessions include having frequent thoughts of violence and harming loved ones, persistently thinking about performing sexual acts the person dislikes, or having thoughts that are prohibited by religious beliefs. People with OCD may also be preoccupied with order and symmetry, have difficulty throwing things out (so they accumulate), or hoard unneeded items.

Healthy people also have rituals, such as checking to see if the stove is off several times before leaving the house. The difference is that people with OCD perform their rituals even though doing so interferes with daily life and they find the repetition distressing. Although most adults with OCD recognize that what they are doing is senseless, some adults and most children may not realize that their behavior is out of the ordinary.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Symptoms and Onset

OCD affects about 2.2 million American adults, and the problem can be accompanied by eating disorders, other anxiety disorders, or depression. It strikes men and women in roughly equal numbers and usually appears in childhood, adolescence, or early adulthood. One-third of adults with OCD develop symptoms as children, and research indicates that OCD might run in families.

The course of the disease is quite varied. Symptoms may come and go, ease over time, or get worse. If OCD becomes severe, it can keep a person from working or carrying out normal responsibilities at home. People with OCD may try to help themselves by avoiding situations that trigger their obsessions, or they may use alcohol or drugs to calm themselves.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Treatment

OCD usually responds well to treatment with certain medications and/or exposure-based psychotherapy, in which people face situations that cause fear or anxiety and become less sensitive (desensitized) to them. NIMH is supporting research into new treatment approaches for people whose OCD does not respond well to the usual therapies. These approaches include combination and augmentation (add-on) treatments, as well as modern techniques such as deep brain stimulation.

Panic disorder is a real illness that can be successfully treated. It is characterized by sudden attacks of terror, usually accompanied by a pounding heart, sweatiness, weakness, faintness, or dizziness. During these attacks, people with panic disorder may flush or feel chilled; their hands may tingle or feel numb; and they may experience nausea, chest pain, or smothering sensations. Panic attacks usually produce a sense of unreality, a fear of impending doom, or a fear of losing control.

A fear of one’s own unexplained physical symptoms is also a symptom of panic disorder. People having panic attacks sometimes believe they are having heart attacks, losing their minds, or on the verge of death. They can’t predict when or where an attack will occur, and between episodes many worry intensely and dread the next attack.

Panic attacks can occur at any time, even during sleep. An attack usually peaks within 10 minutes, but some symptoms may last much longer.

“For me, a panic attack is almost a violent experience. I feel disconnected from reality. I feel like I’m losing control in a very extreme way. My heart pounds really hard, I feel like I can’t get my breath, and there’s an overwhelming feeling that things are crashing in on me.”

“It started 10 years ago, when I had just graduated from college and started a new job. I was sitting in a business seminar in a hotel and this thing came out of the blue. I felt like I was dying.”

“In between attacks there is this dread and anxiety that it’s going to happen again. I’m afraid to go back to places where I’ve had an attack. Unless I get help, there soon won’t be anyplace where I can go and feel safe from panic.”

How does a panic disorder affect your life?

Panic disorder affects about 6 million American adults and is twice as common in women as men. Panic attacks often begin in late adolescence or early adulthood, but not everyone who experiences panic attacks will develop panic disorder. Many people have just one attack and never have another. The tendency to develop panic attacks appears to be inherited.

People who have full-blown, repeated panic attacks can become very disabled by their condition and should seek treatment before they start to avoid places or situations where panic attacks have occurred. For example, if a panic attack happened in an elevator, someone with panic disorder may develop a fear of elevators that could affect the choice of a job or an apartment, and restrict where that person can seek medical attention or enjoy entertainment.

Some people’s lives become so restricted that they avoid normal activities, such as grocery shopping or driving. About one-third become housebound or are able to confront a feared situation only when accompanied by a spouse or other trusted person. When the condition progresses this far, it is called agoraphobia, or fear of open spaces.

Panic disorder treatments

Early treatment can often prevent agoraphobia, but people with panic disorder may sometimes go from doctor to doctor for years and visit the emergency room repeatedly before someone correctly diagnoses their condition. This is unfortunate, because panic disorder is one of the most treatable of all the anxiety disorders, responding in most cases to certain kinds of medication or certain kinds of cognitive psychotherapy, which help change thinking patterns that lead to fear and anxiety.

Panic disorder is often accompanied by other serious problems, such as depression, drug abuse, or alcoholism. These conditions need to be treated separately. Symptoms of depression include feelings of sadness or hopelessness, changes in appetite or sleep patterns, low energy, and difficulty concentrating. Most people with depression can be effectively treated with antidepressant medications, certain types of psychotherapy, or a combination of the two.
