Dust Mites

Dust mites are tiny microscopic relatives of the spider and live on mattresses, bedding, upholstered furniture, carpets and curtains.

You lose a liter of body moisture every night, creating a perfect breeding ground in your mattress for bacteria and dust mites. The dust mite is found in every home, particularly in bedding, mattresses and under sheets where they thrive in large numbers.

They eat microscopic flakes of human skin which we shed every night during our sleep. Your mattress can’t be washed, and, if unprotected, its inhabitants and dust can cause various allergies such as asthma, runny nose, watery eyes, morning congestion, eczema and hay fever.

No matter how clean a home is, dust mites cannot be totally eliminated. However, the number of mites can be reduced by following the suggestions below.

Preventive Strategies

Use a dehumidifier or air conditioner to maintain relative humidity at about 50% or below.

Encase your mattress and pillows in dust-proof or allergen impermeable covers, more commonly known as dust mite covers.

Wash all bedding and blankets once a week in hot water (at least 130 – 140°F) to kill dust mites. Non-washable bedding can be frozen overnight to kill dust mites.

Replace wool or feathered bedding with synthetic materials and traditional stuffed animals with washable ones.

If possible, replace wall-to-wall carpets in bedrooms with bare floors (linoleum, tile or wood) and remove fabric curtains and upholstered furniture.

Use a damp mop or rag to remove dust. Never use a dry cloth since this just stirs up mite allergens.

Use a vacuum cleaner with either a double-layered microfilter bag or a HEPA filter to trap allergens that pass through a vacuum’s exhaust.

Wear a mask while vacuuming to avoid inhaling allergens, and stay out of the vacuumed area for 20 minutes to allow any dust and allergens to settle after vacuuming.

Common house dust may contain asthma triggers. When you are treating your house for dust mites, try these simple steps as well.

Remove dust often with a damp cloth.

Vacuum carpet and fabric-covered furniture to reduce dust build-up.

Using vacuums with high efficiency filters or central vacuums may be helpful.

People with asthma or allergies should leave the area being vacuumed.

Unprotected Mattresses

As many as 2 million mites have been counted in unprotected mattresses and it only takes 4 months for an unprotected mattress to become infested.
